Industrial Ethernet jacks with integrated magnetics & PoE

18 March 2019

TE Connectivity (TE) is introducing a new series of Ethernet jacks with integrated magnetics and Power over Ethernet (PoE) specifically designed for industrial applications which help to simplify PCB design efforts and simplify peripheral powering in the total system

“Integrated magnetics in our new Ethernet jacks eliminate the need for any layout on the analogue part of the circuitry on the board, while still meeting system transmission requirements,” says Ruud van den Brink, TE’s product manager for the new Ethernet jacks. “And because they conform to the IEEE 802.3at (PoE+) standard, these jacks can be used to power devices up to 25.5W on every port. We believe we now have a highly interesting offering for the industrial market.”

The Ethernet jacks are built using a flame-resistant (UL94-V0) liquid crystal plastic (LCP) that withstands high temperatures, which means they can be used with reflow soldering at 260°C, along with other components, simplifying assembly and reducing overall costs. The use of a three-wire choke prevents coil saturation and minimizes interference between power and signals.

Use of thick gold plating (0,76 µm over 1,27 µm nickel) on the contacts provides improved corrosion protection, reducing the risk of contact problems over time when the jacks are used in harsh environments. The jacks have an extended operating temperature range, stretching from minus 40˚C to 85˚C, making them ideal for a broad spectrum of industrial applications.
